Dr.Daniel Rudman, an endocrinologist from Madison, Wisconsin, conducted one of the most popular studies on Growth Hormone in 1985. In a new study reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Dr. J. Gibney, St. Thomas Hospital, London looked at 21 adult patients with growth hormone-deficiency who originally enrolled in a study of growth hormone replacement therapy in 1987. In the decade following, 10 patients continued to take growth hormone, while 11 received either an inactive placebo or nothing. The researchers found that the subjects who continued to take growth hormone had a reduction of LDL ("bad") cholesterol compared with those not taking the drug. While the group who went untreated had a loss of muscle strength over time, there was no loss in the treated group. Individuals on growth hormone replacement had an improvement in energy levels and well being, while there was no change in the untreated group, according to the published study. Dr. Gibney concluded that "growth hormone replacement for ten years can effectively improve lipid profile and reduce the decline in muscle strength."
